Visit to Children's Hospital

Aaron was able to go to school for 1.5 hours today. We left at 11:00 AM, picked up Jonathan, and then headed down to Boston. We got there a little early to get the X-rays. Thankfully, we were seen after waiting only 45 minutes. The waiting room was very crowded, and there were a lot of unhappy parents waiting for their turn.

We first saw the nurse, and she said that the pins looked really clean (wonderful job, Jonathan) and that Aaron was healthy. Dr. Snyder came in and pulled up the X-rays. Good news! Aaron has gained 21 mm of new bone! Jon will try to scan the X-ray pictures in tomorrow so that you can see them. The new bone is less white than the existing bone. It will take a while for it to ossify.

We had a lot of questions, as you can imagine. And, we were able to get most of them answered. His toes are beginning to curl under which isn't good, but it is an expected consequence of lengthening. We talked about ways to work on that. Also, his bone is bowing quite a bit, and there is a way to adjust the lengthening so that it fixes that to an extent. Because Aaron is having quite a bit of pain with the lengthening, we talked about slowing it down to 1/2 mm per day or even 1/4 mm per day. Dr. Snyder also wants Aaron to have PT twice per week and to be more aggressive about walking. That will be a tough one, but I suppose it will get better the more he does it. Overall it was a good and encouraging visit.

Because we were seen relatively early, we were able to get out quickly and avoid traffic. Bonus! We stopped to pick out a Halloween costume for Aaron (something we really haven't had time to do). It was very frustrating because most of the costumes are designed like body suits which won't fit over Aaron's fixator. It's amazing how many things are affected by this extra thing attached to his leg! Aaron was a little upset about that. Although initially he wanted to be a pirate, he finally found him a Prince Caspian costume that came with a sword (it is all about the weapon, apparently). So, we left with a happy Aaron.

Next we picked Ethan up from the Johnson's where he went after school. How nice it is to have so many friends to help out! And, we came home to another wonderful home cooked meal provided by a friend.
