Huge Milestone

At Wednesday's appointment, the CT scan showed that Aaron's tibia looked strong enough to remove the fixator. Dr. Snyder, who is pretty conservative in his treatments, scheduled surgery for today.

This morning we all woke up at 4 am to drive down to Boston. No chance for Aaron to get hungry or thirsty. Ethan came with us and we picked up Nana on the way. Ethan is dismayed that he will have to finish his homework while waiting for Aaron. Aaron was Dr. Snyder's first case. He picked neon orange for his cast color and looked forward to having his happy juice again. He got a bit nervous right before worrying about anesthesia and being in the operating room. He recovered quickly and was playing with the anesthesiologist.

Surgery was relatively quick - about an hour, and Dr. Snyder emerged from the OR with Aaron's hardware! Pretty amazing! I'll take some pictures of the long pins and wires that were through his bone. Dr. Snyder said that the surgery was successful (easy) and gave us the mold of his leg. Nick, Aaron's orthotist, will be making a bi-valved brace for him to wear for the next couple of months. He will only need to have the cast on for about a week. He will be able to walk around fine with both the cast and the brace.

Dr. Snyder gave him some antibiotics in the OR and some oral antibiotics for home. He said Aaron's pin sites looked good and that the infection has cleared up. We are in the recovery room right now waiting for Sleeping Beauty to wake up. It takes him a bit of time to wake up. He is peacefully resting with his stuffed animals by his side.
